Phil Gray returned to the attack as Paul Moody was rested and Darren Patterson played his second game of the season, this one as captain, in place of usual skipper Andy Crosby. An injury to Lee Maddison saw Crosby come on at half-time and Paul Powell replaced Paul Tait and Andy Scott came on for Gray, both three minutes after York scored.
Referee P Jones didn't book any United players but took the names of three Yorkies. The attendance was 3,290, and two match reports can be found hereabouts.
United have sunk three places as a result of this defeat, to 21st in the Third Division, or 89th in the league, with just Bristol Rovers, Lincoln and relegated Halifax below us. Halifax went down 5-0 at Darlington to ensure their Conference status next season, whilst Rovers beat Kidderminster 2-1 to ensure their safety. Lincoln went down 2-1 at home to Shrewsbury. Plymouth stay top despite losing 1-0 at Hartlepool, and despite Luton beating Mansfield 5-3. This gives Cheltenham a four point gap in third place after their 1-0 win over Hull. United's next opponents, Leyton Orient, drew 0-0 at home to Scunthorpe.
Phil Whelan scored Southend's second in their 3-1 over Exeter. There were two former United players on target in the Premiership. Matty Elliot scored Leicester's equaliser in their 2-1 defeat at Sunderland (although some sources say it was Paul Dickov) and Robbie Mustoe scored the only goal as Middlesbrough added to Derby's relegation possibilities.
