United started with the same line-up as began against Bury but an injury to Manny Omoyinmi saw him replaced by Andy Scott in the 39th minute. Steve Basham came on for David Oldfield after 70 minutes and Bobby Ford was an injury time replacement for Dave Waterman.

The day's biggest winners in the Division were Rushden, who beat Torquay 3-0 and Leyton Orient also scored three, but Macclesfield got two in reply. Bristol Rovers and Hull drew 1-1 at the Memorial Ground whilst Bury lost their second game, going down 1-0 at home to Cambridge United. The other relegated club, Bournemouth, were held to a goalless draw at Dean Court by Kidderminster Harriers. Paul Simpson's Rochdale lost 2-0 at Lincoln, Southend lost 1-0 at home to Carlisle and York beat Shrewsbury 2-1.
