Woking up to smell the coffee

From the Rage Online newsdesk Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Woking are tomorrow's visitors to Grenoble Road, looking to earn their first Conference point of the season against a so far hit-and-miss Oxford United side. It promises to be a nice sunny day, with the atmosphere enlivened by United's first tailgate party in the West End car park before the game. Woking have been Bank Holiday visitors before, when a Conference record attendance of 11,065 turned up on Boxing Day 2006 to watch United flop to a tame goalless draw, a scoreline replicated last season.[@opponent]woking[/@opponent][@connection]woking[/@connection]

The good news for Oxford is that James Clarke is available after serving his three-game ban following his dismissal at Barrow on the opening day of the season. The bad news is that Luke Foster is unavailable after his red card at Wrexham on Thursday. This gives Darren Patterson the choice of bringing in Chris Willmott as a straight swap for Foster, bringing in Clarke to right back and continuing with Matt Day as Foster's replacement, or combining the two options and playing Clarke at full back and Willmott in the centre. Joe Burnell and Phil Trainer are still absent, so Eddie Hutchinson could continue in central midfield, although ROS Sam Deering has staked a decent claim for a start after impressive performances off the bench. However, we expect Patto to continue with Levi Reid and Lewis Haldane in the wide positions. Up front we anticipate that Yemi Odubade and James Constable will again start the game, but the good news is that Jamie Guy may well be on the bench, ready to make his first competitive appearance for the Yellows.

Woking have had a dismal start to the season, even worse than United's, their latest woe being a 1-0 home defeat by Forest Green Rovers yesterday. They will be without former-U Joel Ledgister, who has a broken hand, and are likely to persist with the 10-0-0 formation with which they played on their last two visits. The question is whether or not this season United have enough guile to overcome that. We suspect they might, but we've been wrong before.
