United lost 1-0 to Woking in Surrey this evening in their fourth, and toughest so far, pre-season friendly. The home side took the lead ten minutes or so before half time with a goal from David Piper. United made several chances and hit the woodwork a couple of times but were unable to get back into the game. The second half degenerated a bit with a number of players being asked to leave the field for fifteen minutes to cool off by the referee, including Gareth Hall and Dean Whitehead for Oxford.
United continued to play with some triallists, including Hall and John Dreyer, who came on for Wayne Hatswell, and Kyle Lightbourne formerly of Stoke and Walsall. Unfortunately 33 year old Lightbourne failed to impress and was substituted for Phil Gray midway through the second half. Based on the maxim that one learns more when one loses, which would make David Kemp the wisest man around, hopefully Mark Wright will have learned enough from this wretched performance to have identified a few weak spots to repair.
