On Tuesday night Oxford United finally put to bed the second half home hoodoo, by taking the lead against Dagenham & Redbridge with an Oli Johnson header, letting them back in with a poorly defended goal, before a cross from Mehdi Kerrouche left James Constable to seal the win and take all three points.
Saturday sees United's first visit to Bristol Rovers' Memorial Stadium for six seasons. Back in September 2005, Brian Talbot's team drew 1-1. Chris Hackett took the lead for United, with Richard Walker equalising in the second half. Playing for the Pirates that day were Chris Carruthers and Jefferson Louis. United's last away win was in December 2002 under Ian Atkins, 2-0, with goals from Matt Robinson and Jefferson Louis.
United Team news
Damien Batt's two game suspension is finally complete, and he can be expected to return to the defence, perhaps with Andy Whing moving forward into midfield. Alfie Potter, JPP, Tom Craddock, and Tony Capaldi are all on the long term injury list, and Simon Heslop is apparently doubtful.
The last two games have seen results after second half changes and a push forward. Asa Hall has come off at half time each game, to be replaced by Oli Johnson and Lee Holmes respectively. With time ticking down on Tuesday, Scott Rendell and Oli Johnson were replaced by Mehdi Kerrouche and Anthony Tonkin.
Rovers news
The Gas start the game in 15th, 8 places and 10 points behind United, having played a game more. At the end of December / start of January, Rovers suffered a dismal four game losing streak to Gillingham, Plymouth, Crewe, and Barnet. They then picked themselves up, with wins against Hereford, Cheltenham, Bradford and Morecambe, a draw at home to Crawley, before Tuesday's away defeat 1-0 at Shrewsbury.
Top scorer in the league with nine is Matt Harrold, who also tops the fouls list with 52. Scott McGleish has seven goals, and Lee Brown six. Old boy Chris Zebroski has the best shooting statistics with 21 on target and 18 off. Zebroski has also picked up nine yellow cards so far. After the bad tempered affair in the home game, we can perhaps expect a few more bookings.
Manager Mark McGhee, just one month into the job, has also revealed he has been sending injured players off to watch their upcoming opponents, with Aaron Downes the lucky visitor to the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday.
The long awaited new stadium is also making progress, with a deal to sell the Memorial Ground to Sainsburys, financing a new stadium at University of West of England's Frenchay campus. There seems to be an issue as to whether their current landlords, Bristol Rugby move with them. It is reported that Rovers currently pay under
