Oxford United midfielder Andy Whing has been ruled out until after the New Year after suffering a groin injury. The 29-year-old combative defensive midfielder is expected to be sidelined for the next two months after Us boss Chris Wilder confirmed it is a recurrence of the problem that has troubled the former Leyton Orient man so far this season.
Whing could miss up to eleven Division Four matches for the league leaders, and manager Wilder is bitterly disappointed at the recent news: “He’s out well into the new year, possibly mid-January. We’ve now lost a number of important players. It feels like we’ve been here before with all these injuries.”
The midfielder adds to a growing list of long-term absentees for United; joining Deane Smalley (groin), Jake Wright (hamstring), Jon Meades and Alfie Potter (both ankle) in the treatment room.
Meanwhile, Yellows defender Michael Raynes was similarly gutted to discover the extent of his teammate’s injury: “We are gutted for Whingy, and it is a massive blow for us.
“There are not too many people in the Football League that can do the job that Whingy does. Everyone needs a player like Andy Whing in their team.
“But we have good young lads that can now come up, who need to put their hands up. Josh Ruffels has been outstanding in training so he will get an opportunity now to make a mark.”
