On New Years Day in 1985 United beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at Ayresome Park in front of 6,757, Trevor Hebberd scoring the goal. The following season in Division One Oxford went down 3-1 to QPR at Loftus Road, Dave Leworthy scoring United's consolation in his second game for the club. United also played on Jan 1st 1987, this time beating Southampton 3-1 at the Manor thanks to a John Aldridge penalty and other goals from Billy the Whale Whitehurst and Ray Houghton.

Vanquished by the Scotts

United lost 3-0 at Brentford to ensure that the second half of the season continues in the same vein as the first. It might be a new year/decade/century/millennium but it's the same old Oxford, taking the piss. Two goals in the first half from Andy Scott, the second in injury time following a Peter Fear error, were added to in the 88th minute by Scott Partridge. Lee Jarman returned to defence in place of Ross Weatherstone and Steve Anthrobus started up front in place of Manny Omoyinmi. Phil Gray still hasn't recovered from the knock he received against Bournemouth so Paul Powell started in his stead, with Chris Hackett partnering Bus in the forward line. Powell received a second half injury and had to be substituted for Dean Whitehead. A plethora of bookings in the first half saw Jarman, Anthrobus, Jon Richardson and Andy Linighan receive yellow cards before a crowd of 5,020. A match report can be found here and a second one here.

Results elsewhere went United's way, with Luton losing 3-2 at Bournemouth despite leading for much of the game. swindon went down 1-0 to a late goal at Walsall. The game between Port Vale and Bristol Rovers was postponed, as was Swansea's match at Colchester. Paul Wanless scored for Cambridge as they went down 6-2 at Bristol City and John Durnin was on target for Kidderminster, who drew 1-1 at Torquay.
