Oxford United's recent good form continued tonight, as the Yellows won 1-0 at York City, thanks to an Eddie Anaclet goal shortly after half time. United started nervously, playing in an unfamiliar 5-3-2 formation, but after weathering some heavy pressure from the home side this was switched to the more familiar 4-4-2 midway through the first half. Martyn Woolford had an early chance that Billy Turley just managed to scoop over the bar, and then Leo Fortune-West, so often a thorn in United's side, went close. Oxford's best chance of the first half came when Yemi Odubade volleyed just wide from distance, but they went into the break on the back foot, with Turley having to save well from Jimmy Beadle five minutes before half time.[@news]2304[/@news][@opponent]york city[/@opponent]
The second half was only three minutes old when Anaclet gave United the lead. A headed cross from Phil Trainer saw Yemi challenge York keeper Josh Mimms, and the ball fell to Eddie to score the goal that his recent improved performances have merited. The goal sparked the game into life, and United were grateful to Matt Day for a goal-line clearance from Woolford. At the other end, midfielders Adam Murray and Jamie Hand both went close. Barry Quinn was then United's saviour when he cleared a Manny Panther effort from the line, and Oxford were then able to see the game out and earn a hard-fought three points. Meaningless in the greater scheme of things, but welcome nonetheless.
Manager Darren Patterson made three changes to the side that thrashed Farsley Celtic on Saturday. The enforced change was the one that everyone expected, with James Clarke coming in for the suspended Luke Foster. In midfield, Hand came back into the side in place of the disappointing Eddie Hutchinson, while Matt Green was rewarded for his two goals off the bench on Saturday with a place in the starting line-up alongside Yemi, in place of Craig McAllister. Just after the hour, McAllister replaced Green, and with four minutes remaining Justin Richards came on for Yemi.
Tonight's maninblack was D Mohareb, never before in charge of an Oxford match. He broke his cherry with an okay performance, and certainly didn't make any noticeable mistakes. He also refrained from making any bookings, which is a rare pleasure. The attendance was a meaningless end-of-season 1,808, of which a mere 152 were there for Oxonian reasons.
As a result of this win, nothing changes. United remain 13th in the table, and York remain 14th. Exciting stuff. Elsewhere, there were exciting developments for Aldershot, whose 1-1 draw at Exeter City ensured their promotion to the Football League, and caused the Grecians to drop out of the play-off places. Their place was taken by Burton Albion, whose 2-1 win over Halifax Town took them up to third, while dropping the Shaymen back into the relegation zone. It was Weymouth who climbed out of the bottom four, thanks to beating bottom club Droylsden 2-1. Torquay United can't now catch the Shots, despite beating third-bottom Northwich Victoria 1-0 thanks to a Chris Zebroski goal.
Stafford Rangers, like Droylsden already relegated, lost 1-0 at home to Rushden & Diamonds. Jamie Cook was on target for Crawley Town, who beat Grays Athletic 2-1, while Ebbsfleet United beat whipping-boys Farsley 3-1. MyFootballClub were watched by just 810 of their 30,000-odd shareholders.
