U’s all Agog

From the Rage Online newsdesk Saturday, October 2nd, 2004

United went down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the Memorial Ground this afternoon, as Junior Agogo took advantage of individual errors to punish the Us. Agogo scored his first a minute before half-time after he too easily got the better of Leo Roget before coolly beating Chris Tardif from ten yards. Agogo’s second came eight minutes from time, when Lee Thorpe charged down Tardif’s attempted clearance and Agogo slotted the loose ball into the empty net. Rovers deserved the win, although Oxford played well enough, but never looked like having a cutting edge. The closest United came to a goal was when Tommy Mooney headed a Chris Hackett free-kick straight at Kevin Miller when he should have done better.

Graham Rix made two changes from the side that was beaten by Exeter in midweek, Roget coming back into defence in place of Lee Molyneaux, and Paul Wanless made the starting eleven with Tom Winters making way. Rix made just one substitution, replacing Steve Basham with Rob Wolleaston.

The referee was P Prosser, who booked David Woozley, and otherwise didn’t seem to know too much who was doing what, or to whom. The attendance of 8,049 was the day’s highest in the fourth division. We anticipate the possibility of publishing a match report tomorrow, should anyone be kind enough to send one in.

Despite this defeat, United have only dropped one place in the table, to tenth, while Rovers have climbed up to fourth, still unbeaten at home. Yeovil remain top, despite being held at home to a 1-1 draw by 14th-placed Northampton, while Swansea’s 1-1 draw at Chester sees them climb into second place, leaving Ian Rush’s team fifth from bottom. Scunthorpe have dropped to third after going down 2-1 at Boston, who have climbed above Oxford to ninth, with Courtney Pitt scoring their first goal. Wycombe drew 1-1 at home to third-bottom Shrewsbury, to leave the Chairboys fifth, while Orient have climbed to sixth after winning 2-1 at 21st-placed Notts County, with Lee Steele scoring their opening goal. Mansfield occupy the final play-off place after being held to a 2-2 draw by 17th-placed Lincoln.

At the other end of the table Kidderminster remain bottom, Wayne Hatswell’s goal earning them a 1-1 draw with second-bottom Cambridge. Rochdale drew 0-0 at Rushden, while last night Cheltenham drew 1-1 at Grimsby. Macclesfield are now 8th after losing 2-1 at Bury.

In the Conference, Lee Nogan scored York’s second in their 3-1 win over Stevenage, while Dean Windass struck a penalty, the only goal of the game, in Bradford’s third tier win over Barnsley. In the Scottish League Division One, Andy Thomson scored the only goal of the game, a penalty, in Falkirk’s win at Ross County.
