Update on the exes

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, August 1st, 2008

Update (1 August): Mark Wright's central defensive duo were both on the move yesterday. Phil Bolland[@player]bolland, phil[/@player], who was released by Wrexham last season, has joined up with fellow Conference sufferers Cambridge United. Meanwhile, his Aussie partner in the Us rearguard, Scott Guyett[@player]guyett, scott[/@player], has just become AFC Bournemouth's first signing of the summer, joining them from Yeovil Town.

Update (25 July): Changes seem to be coming thick and fast now as the new season pops its head over the parapet and prepares to be shot at. Latest former Ox to switch clubs is the enigmatic Rob Duffy[@player]duffy, robert[/@player], who left Oxford at the end of last season. On Tuesday he played a trial game with Mansfield Town (alongside Alex Jeannin and former Oxford triallist Gary Silk), and yesterday he signed for Newport County, where he met up again with Danny Rose. The pair combined last night when Rose crossed for Duffy to score in Newport's 4-1 win at Caldicott. Meanwhile, Eddie Hutchinson is having a trial with Cambridge United, for whom he will feature in a couple of pre-season games. Let's hope he plays well.

Update (24 July): Almost immediately after being bounced by Hamilton Academicals, striker Gary Twigg[@player]twigg, gary[/@player] got himself a new club. However, he had to go part-time to do it, as he's ended up at Brechin City. Presumably he will now also be searching for a proper job.

Update (22 July): Yesterday saw Michael Standing finally join Conference rivals Lewes, after a lengthy trial there. Standing initially stated that he would only join Lewes if he were unable to secure a contract at a Football League club, so news of his signing indicates that he has finally admitted defeat in that ambition. Meanwhile, former midfielder Derek Townsley has joined Annan Athletic. The lanky Cumbrian was last seen at Workington Reds, having previously played for the ill-fated Gretna, who went tits up at the end of last season. Annan have replaced Gretna in the Scottish League.

Update (18 July): A couple more former lads have been on the move this week. Tubby defender Scott McNiven has left Farsley Celtic and, plummeting down the Pyramid, signed for FA Vase winners AFC Fylde. Closer to home, Didcot Town have captured Neville Roach from Farnborough. Meanwhile, former reserve Paul Milsom, who was player-manager at Mangotsfield United, has been told by doctors that he has a heart condition and that he has to give up the 'player' bit of his job.

Update (7 July): Two former United loan strikers have moved. Richard Walker[@player]walker, richard[/@player], who was quite good but failed to click at Oxford, has left Bristol Rovers to join Shrewsbury Town's ever-expanding roster of forwards. Meanwhile, Andy Campbell[@player]campbell, andy[/@player], once allegedly quite good but useless for Oxford, has agreed terms with Mansfield Town, who are obviously resigning themselves to a season of post-relegation struggle.

Update (3 July): Popular midfielder Danny Rose[@player]rose, daniel[/@player] has today signed for Conference South side Newport County, thus scotching any increasingly obscure hopes that Rage Online held that Darren Patterson might have a change of heart and re-signed the former Manchester United reserve-team captain. Alas, the Rose has not been revived.

Update (2 July): Former loanee, left winger Adam Griffin[@player]griffin, adam[/@player], has left Stockport County and joined Dave Penney's Darlington. Griffin had been released by Stockport at the end of the season.

Update (29 June): Alleged defender Lee Jarman[@player]jarman, lee[/@player] has left Newport County. The man-mountain has moved to Haverfordwest County, of the Principality Welsh Premier League.

With all the hectic close-season transfer activity, you're probably all wondering where the former Us, those glory-boys of yesteryear, have turned up to ply their trade. This article, which will be updated throughout what remains of the summer, will give at least a partial overview of those who used to wear Yellow.

To start with the saddest piece of news, former United goalkeeper Tim Carter[@player]carter, tim[/@player] was found dead on 20 June, underneath some bushes in Manchester. Police have ruled out foul play. One of United's highest-profile former players, Steve McClaren [@player]mcclaren, steve[/@player], has stepped away from the cut-and-thrust of international management and re-entered the fray of club management, at Dutch side FC Twente. Moving the other way, into an international hot seat, is former butter-fingered keeper Paul Kee[@player]kee, paul[/@player], who has taken charge of Northern Ireland under-17s.

There have been a few movements of ex-Oxford players in and around the Conference. For more information see our related item about Conference Transfers. One player not (yet) mentioned on there is Michael Standing[@player]standing, michael[/@player], who ended last season at Grays Athletic. He has spent the last month training with new Conference club, part-timers Lewes, and has said that he will join them unless he can secure a place with a League side.

Other player movements include former loan striker Chris Zebroski[@player]zebroski, chris[/@player], who has joined fourth division Wycombe Wanderers from Millwall for
