On This Day |
March 7th 1992 was the date that United welcomed swindon to the Manor, and welcoming it was as the U's ran out 5-3 winners. Two goals each from Joey Beauchamp and John Durnin were complemented by a Jim Magilton penalty. The attendance was 7,995. In 1998 United won 2-0 at Maine Road, thanks to goals from Joey Beauchamp and Jamie Cook. Last season March 7th was the date that United went down 3-1 at home to Reading, despite taking the lead through Paul Powell. |
Another high-scoring game against Wrexham saw United on the wrong end of a 5-3 scoreline, despite taking the lead three times. United initially went ahead as early as the second minute when Dean Whitehead was fouled and Phil Gray scored the resulting penalty. This lead lasted just ten minutes but Oxford again went in front in first half injury time as Paul Powell volleyed home after some excellent work by Phil Gray. This time the lead lasted until midway through the second half but five minutes later Matt Murphy restored United's advantage which this time lasted all of two minutes before Lee Trundell, Wrexham's £30,000 buy from Rhyl three weeks ago, completed his remarkable hat-trick, including two quite extraordinary strikes. With just five minutes remaining the referee Phil Joslin awarded the home side a penalty, duly despatched by Darren Ferguson, who then went on to score his second deep into injury time. United started with the same line-up as at Ashton Gate but reverted to 4-4-2, but just eight minutes after half-time Andy Scott was stretchered from the field to be replaced by Steve Anthrobus. The attendance was a risible 3,009. A match report can be found here.
Elsewhere Luton beat Cambridge 1-0, swindon beat Oldham 3-0 and Northampton beat Bristol Rovers 2-1. United are now just 19 points from safety.
