United should have taken all three points from Kidderminster, but in the end they were grateful to escape with one point and their unbeaten record intact from Aggborough. As the game was seemingly heading toward a goalless draw it took a moment of brilliance from substitute Mark Rawle, scoring his second goal in two games, to break the deadlock. Rawle collected a weak clearance on the left corner of the penalty area and curled his shot into the far top corner with ten minutes to go. With the United fans still celebrating what must surely have been the winning goal a defensive lapse gifted the home team an equaliser, Adam Willis left totally unmarked to tap the ball home, just two minutes after United had taken . It could have been even worse as only a couple of minutes later Jon Ashton nudged over Bo Henriksen in the penalty area after finding himself on the wrong side of the Dane. Fortunately Henriksen put the penalty wide of Woodman’s left hand post, after Woody had bluffed him by diving to the right. So in the end United were happy with 1-1, although they will be regretting not going on to win after going ahead.
Ian Atkins only made one change from the side that beat Swansea last week, bringing in David Oldfield for the suspended Julian Alsop. Rawle came on to replace Oldfield in the 72nd minute, although it took him a lengthy eight minutes before he managed to score today. In the final minute James Hunt replaced Danny Brown, although it was too late to make a difference.
Referee Trevor Parkes had an excellent game, hardly making any dodgy decisions, letting the game flow, and not showing a card all game. The attendance was a surprisingly low 3,262, despite a large away following. Hopefully a match report will be published tomorrow.
Despite being the only team in Division Three to remain undefeated, United have now slipped to third in the table. Swansea have gone back to the top after beating Mansfield 4-1, and York have dropped to second following their 3-0 defeat at Lincoln. Hull City have climbed up to fourth after beating Boston 2-1, and Northampton’s 1-0 win over Doncaster has seen them move up to fifth, one place ahead of Donny. Rochdale have gone seventh after their 4-2 win over Darlington, who remain second from bottom.
Bristol Rovers have dropped out of the play-off places after losing 2-1 at Huddersfield, while Cheltenham had a big win at Orient, beating them 4-1 despite a goalless second half. Torquay were leading at Scunthorpe until the 86th minute, when two late goals earned Scunny the points. Macclesfield beat League newcomers Yeovil 4-1, but Carlisle remain bottom despite earning their first point of the season, 0-0 at home to Cambridge United. Former United triallist Leon Constantine scored the goal that gave United’s next opponents, Southend, the points over Bury.
In the Conference Phil Bolland scored his second goal in successive games as Chester won 4-0 at Gravesend, while in Division Three Guy Butters scored Brighton’s second in their 3-3 draw at Plymouth. In the SPL former United striker Derek Lilley scored for Livingston at Celtic, but he still found himself on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline.
