United caught cod as Fleetwood do the double

Oxford United 1 Fleetwood Town 2

Oxford United have lost their last 3 games and it wasn’t going to end against Fleetwood Town tonight as they left Grenoble Road with all 3 points.

It was an open first half with Oxford pressing but James Constable, Alfie Potter and Deane Smalley all had shots off target. The first goal came midway through the half as a left to right move from McLaughlin found Jason Crowther to just calmly slot the ball past a helpless Luke McCormick.

In the midfield the battles were fierce but when United had a chance to break and find the equalising goal they would pass to the red of Fleetwood instead of passing the ball to a team mate. Frustrating. The results at Grenoble Road haven’t been going the way of the hosts and it became worse as in the second half the visitors doubled their advantage as a superb ball found Junior Brown who scored with a diving header.

It was an uphill battle to get anything out of this game but in the 88th minute Oxford mastered a corner which was narrowly wide of Davies far post. In the 89th minute Liam Davis struck with a great 25 yarder which left Scott Davies helpless as he could only pick it out of the net.

It got the hosts going as the supporters got behind the team but it just wasn’t enough and there will have been a lot of soul searching in the host’s dressing room at full time.

The referee gave the game a chance to go on but when he needed to he stopped the play and told the players to calm down or issue a yellow card.

Oxford is creating chances but once again they fail to convert and they are severely punished. Where are the next 3 points coming from? With Plymouth next on the radar for Oxford United we can only hope for some improvement in front of goal…
