United continued their inexorable slide towards Division Three with a 3-2 defeat at Oldham today, despite being level three times. Oxford have now failed to win at Boundary Park in each of their fourteen attempts and this result leaves the U's seven points behind Luton (who won 3-1 at Stoke) and 12 from safety.
Carlo Corazzin opened the scoring in the second minute but Phil Gray equalised in the 16th minute from the penalty spot after he had been fouled. David Eyres restored the Latics' lead in the 52nd minute but United equalised again in the 68th with an own goal from Mark Innes following good work by Manny Omoyinmi. Equity lasted only one minute before Paul Jones secured the three points for the home side.
United recalled Peter Fear to the midfield, in place of Simon Weatherstone. Derek Lilley limped off with hamstring trouble in the first half, to be replaced by Omoyinmi, whilst Paul Powell later came on for Fear, also injured. With fifteen minutes or so remaining new signing Wayne Hatswell came on for John Robertson for his league debut, interestingly being played as an advanced midfielder. The attendance of 3,986 saw Keith Andrews receive a yellow card. A match report is here.
