Oxford United visit Melbourne Park, home of Chelmsford City, for the first time tomorrow in the FA Trophy third round. This is the furthest that the Us have reached in the competition, and victory over the Clarets would take United into the Trophy quarter-finals, just two games from a Wembley final. Yippee.
Oxford and Chelmsford have crossed swords many times in the past, most recently in December 1967 in the FA Cup first round, when after two 3-3 draws the tie went to a second replay at Brentford, with Southern League Chelmsford winning 1-0. Before that the sides were regular opponents in the Southern League, when United won ten games to Chelmsford's seven although, ominously perhaps, United have never beaten the Essex side in any cup games, in eight attempts.
Chris Wilder has almost a full squad to choose from, with just Adam Murray missing after suffering back spasms before last Saturday's 4-0 win at Grays Athletic, and left-back Anthony Tonkin cup-tied from his time at Cambridge United. Any permutation of players is possible, with plenty of options to choose from, possibly including 'new' signing Chris Hargreaves. Greavesie of course was United's captain under Brian Talbot and Jim Smith, and many supporters associate the man with Oxford's relegation from the Football League in 2006 and the failure to win the Conference play-offs the following season. We would never presume to be so judgemental and will welcome back the 37-year-old with open arms and a peck on each cheek. Should Hargreaves appear, he will be the fourth-oldest player to have donned the famous Yellow shirt.
Chelmsford have one or two issues of their own to contend with. They currently lie fourth in the Conference South, although just one point adrift of second-placed Woking, who have played two games fewer. However, they have lost their last two matches, both at home, and could be without influential skipper Dave Rainford, who picked up a bad ankle injury in Saturday's defeat to Basingstoke Town, while midfielder Ollie Berquez is also unlikely to be fit.
