The great escape

The Rage Online readers Match of the Nineties poll was won, convincingly eventually, by that memorable game at Tranmere. United, needing a win to stay up, beat the Wirral outfit 2-1, with goals by Joey Beauchamp and John Durnin (former United star John Aldridge scoring Tranny's equaliser). Other results also went our way (including notably a David Speedie hat-trick for Blackburn at Plymouth) to ensure that Oxford stayed in Division One for another season and Brian Horton's record of never being relegated was maintained (until this season when he has just suffered that ignominy with Port Vale). 28% of voters chose the Tranmere game, knocking the 4-0 defeat of Peterborough, which ensured our automatic promotion to Division One four years ago, into second place with 20%. Equal third, with 12.5% each, were the 3-0 victory over swindon at the Manor (with Joey memorably scoring the third in front of the swindon supporters) and last season's 1-1 draw with Chelsea, when United were denied a historic victory by referee Mike Read and the Chelsea cheats. Fifth place went to the 3-2 FA Cup win at Leeds (erroneously typed as 3-3, sorry!) chosen by just over 6% of voters.
