Oxford United 3 Northampton Town 1

Oxford got back to winning ways this afternoon, as they overcame a poor Northampton Town side at the KasStad. In a game of firsts, Alfie Potter scored his first goal of the season after just four minutes to send United on their way, but poor defending allowed the visitors to level through Leon McKenzie on the quarter hour. United regained the lead on the stroke of half-time when Josh Payne scored his first goal for the club from a sweetly struck direct free-kick. A nervy second half was concluded when Oxford were awarded their first penalty of the season for a foul on Simon Clist which saw John Johnson sent off, with Tom Craddock stepping up to convert easily past Chris Dunn.

Chris Wilder made just one change to the side that surrendered a two-goal lead at Macclesfield Town last week; Jake Wright returned to the heart of the defence, with Leigh Franks making way. The first change was made in the 66th minute, when Mark Creighton replaced Harry Worley to join Wright in defence. With seven minutes remaining United made a double substitution, with Clist coming on for Asa Hall, and Matt Green replacing James Constable.

Potter opened the scoring with the first real attack of the game. Ben Purkiss played the ball into the box, Constable allowed it to reach Potter who played Beano back in. Constable
