The Bigger Picture

From the Rage Online newsdesk Thursday, October 30th, 2003

Rage Online has received some information from an unidentified source that might reveal more about Firoz Kassam’s recent announcements.

According to our source the O-Zone leisure complex, which houses a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, new club shop and various other facilities, has been built 300 square metres larger than on the originally submitted blueprint for which planning consent was granted. This land is still currently owned by Oxford City Council, which has yet to transfer it to Firoka. Kassam had requested an early transfer of the land so that he could get a cinema operator to come on board, but this didn’t happen and Vue, the proposed operators, pulled out of the deal. It is unclear why the Council failed to notice the increase in size of the leisure centre earlier, or what the next steps will be. It is highly unlikely that they will request for the complex to be demolished and rebuilt to the original specifications, and so that doesn’t leave many further options.

Meanwhile the club is in negotiations with Thames Water to open up the land opposite the stadium, on the south side of Grenoble Road, to use as a temporary car park until a proposed housing development is complete. This is while OxVox are continuing to negotiate with landlords Magdalen College about using the Science Park for parking on match days.
