A strong Oxford United second string had a run out at Kidlington this afternoon, and strolled to a 2-0 win courtesy of two Matty Taylor goals. United's side featured a number of first-team players who have featured recently, such as Yemi Odubade, Eddie Hutchinson, and Chris Carruthers, plus regular substitutes Ben Hinchliffe and Matt Day, as well as two coming back from injury in Shane Killock and Barry Quinn, who was captain for the day.
Taylor's first goal enlivened an otherwise fairly mundane first half. He picked up a pass from ROS Declan Benjamin, cut inside and shot home from a tight angle. The game improved in the second half, with Hutch missing from a header when well placed and Carruthers driving just wide from distance. Taylor's second goal was a header from an inch-perfect cross from Yemi. Taylor missed two or three opportunities to bag a hat-trick, while Kidlington rarely troubled the Oxford back line or Hinchliffe, although they knocked the ball around nicely.
Chris Wilder wasn't in attendance, being up in Sheffield to take part in a charity match, but Mickey Lewis will doubtless pass on the message that Killock and Quinn both played well, that Carruthers looked very good, and that ROS Benjamin should be knocking on the door of the first team sometime soon.
