Labour leader on Oxford City Council and friend to the multiplex cause, John Tanner, lost his seat in yesterday's local elections as his party lost overall control of the Council. The City Council is now composed of 21 Labour seats, 21 Liberal Democrats, 8 Greens (the largest such group in the country) and, would you believe it, one Tory (in Marston). What this means for Kassam and his multiplex application remains to be seen. The Lib-Dems and Labour both claim support for the club, although the Lib-Dem's manifesto fails to mention Minchery Farm at all and expresses support for a bowling alley and multiplex cinema at Oxpens. The Greens say that they believe OUFC to be a community asset and therefore, knowing how essential the development is to the club, won't oppose the multiplex, even though it obviously goes against the grain for them. The unknown factor is the Conservative Councillor, Barbara Burgess. Doubtless all will be revealed over the next few months.
It transpires that Denis Smith will be at Millwall after all and not at his sister-in-law's wedding. Some people will do anything to get out of meeting the in-laws!
It could hardly get more conclusive: 95% of voters in the Rage Online poll want Richard Knight to be signed by the club after his loan spell from Derby expires. Only 2% preferred Pål Lundin, and he's already been axed by the club. No-one preferred Andre Arendse, which is unfortunate for United's South African goalie.
There is speculation that former United reserve left back Nigel Winterburn is set to leave Arsenal in the Summer on a Bosman transfer. Winterburn refused to deny the speculation, stating: “If I leave, and I'll decide that in the summer, I want to keep playing. I've been linked with several clubs but who says I have to stay in London?”
