Stuffed by the Gills

United unluckily lost to an injury time goal by Junior Lewis at Priestfield Road today. Starting with Andre Arendse in goal and Phil Whelan and Mark Watson in central defence Oxford matched Gillingham throughout the game, even after Peter Fear was injured in the first half and had to be replaced by Derek Lilley. In the second half Joey Beauchamp was hit in the face by the ball and had to go off, Simon Weatherstone coming on in his stead. Watson was booked for a rash trip, and Weatherstone and Craig Russell both received yellow cards for disputing the home sides controversial late winner, which followed an apparent foul on Arendse. There is more colour in this match report.
This result pushes Oxford back into the relegation zone, following Blackpool's 2-0 win over Notts County. Wrexham won again, beating Luton 1-0 to pull themselves six points ahead of United, and Reading beat Bournemouth 2-0. Cambridge United draw 1-1 at Brentford and Scunthorpe also drew, 0-0 at home to Colchester. Of our relegation rivals only Chesterfield also lost, 5-1 at Stoke (who have been linked with a possible bid for former United striker Dean Saunders).

Remember the names?

Fulham's second in their 3-1 win over Port Vale was scored by former United centre back Andy Melville. Darlington's third in their 4-1 defeat of Rochdale was scored by Marco Gabbiadini, of course. David Penney scored Doncaster's equaliser, but they still lost 2-1 at Hednesford Town.
