Stopping the rot?

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, October 29th, 2004

Cheltenham Town come to visit tomorrow as Oxford bid to turn round their poor run of recent form that has seen them lose their last five league games, including the last two at home. There is some positive news for the Us, as the last two performances, at Northampton and at Macclesfield, have shown signs that the side are starting to turn things around.

Jon Ashton was back in defence at Moss Rose, and his pace made a big difference, with new loan signing Sam Togwell featuring for the last five minutes in place of the injured Leo Roget. The big question mark is over who will be in goal, with Simon Cox featuring in the last game and a half after Chris Tardif was taken off with a back injury at Sixfields. Jamie Brooks, two-goal hero of the reserves’ win at Northampton on Tuesday, is unlikely to feature, although he could be in line for a place on the bench again. There is still no news concerning the fitness of Tom Winters, who could be the key to solving United’s left-midfield problems.

After a shakey start, Cheltenham have themselves shown signs of turning things around. Although they’ve only won one of their last six away games, the Robins have won their last three matches, and will be coming to Oxford in a confident mood. The onus will be on Oxford to break down their massed defence, and Rage Online, despite exuding confidence, feels that a 1-1 scoreline is the most likely outcome.

Also on Saturday, at five past five, the draw takes place for the first round of the FA Cup. Meanwhile, three youth-teamers, the Tweed twins and Craig Davies, have been fined and disciplined for their part in the incident that saw former Cheltenham striker Julian Alsop dismissed.
