Staying alive

From the Rage Online newsdesk Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

So, United's season remains alive, just, going into the last day. Following tonight's results Oxford know the sequence of results required for them to gain an unlikely place in the play-offs. Histon are now unreachable after they scraped a 1-0 win over Conference whipping-boys Weymouth, who now need to win their last two games to stay up. Stevenage Borough are now also out of reach after their 3-1 win over Kidderminster Harriers, for whom Justin Richards scored. This means that if Kidderminster fail to win their final game of the season, at home to Kettering Town on Sunday, Oxford will go above them should United beat second-bottom Northwich Victoria. Barrow also did Oxford a small favour by holding fifth-placed Torquay United to a 1-1 draw at Holker Street. Torquay's equaliser was scored by Chris Hargreaves – has he no loyalty? – meaning that for Oxford to overtake them the Gulls must lose their final game, at home to top-of-the-table Burton Albion. Burton need just one point to win the title, while Torquay need to win to ensure that Kidderminster can't overtake them.

Results elsewhere saw Woking relegated without even playing, as York City beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1. This leaves both the Minstermen and Barrow four points clear of Woking, who have one game left. Grays Athletic hauled themselves to safety with a 1-0 win over Crawley Town which means that the lowest that Oxford can finish is seventh, thus halting the season-on-season decline that has haunted the club with just one exception over the past 11 seasons.

Elsewhere, Tamworth ensured that they will be promoted from the Conference North with a 1-0 win over Hinckley, to go five points clear of Gateshead. The Geordies (yes they are) will contest the play-offs along with Alfreton Town, who drew 3-3 at Farsley Celtic, Southport, defeated 1-0 at Blyth Spartans, and AFC Telford, 3-0 winners over Burscough In the Conference South we already know that AFC Wimbledon will almost certainly go up because of their vastly superior goal difference on Hampton & Richmond. Hampton will contest the play-offs with Eastleigh and Hayes & Yeading, while the fourth play-off spot will be filled by either Chelmsford City or Maidenhead United. In the Southern League, Oxford City's 2-1 defeat at Brackley Town damaged their play-off hopes, and like United they will need to win their final game, at Clevedon Town, and hope results elsewhere go their way to keep their season alive for another couple of games.
