United today signed Richard Baker. However, the new face is not the veteran broadcaster and newsreader, but a midfielder from Bury. He was released by the Shakers at the end of last season and he meets up again with Chris Wilder, who was assistant manager to Alan Knill at Gigg Lane in the six months before he joined Oxford in December 2008.
Baker, an attacking midfielder, has signed a six-month contract that will take him up to the January transfer window. This will allow Wilder to properly assess Baker before deciding whether or not to offer him a longer contract, or if he's another Marcus Kelly.
This Saturday it's the Oxford United open day, with the weather forecast set for sunny intervals after tomorrow's light rain (don't believe it – it always rains at the open day). Among the various activities, such as the launch of the new home shirt, there will be a stall where you can buy copies of Oxford United: The Complete Record and Oxford United: On This Day, as well as pre-ordering your copy of the new book Oxford United: Miscellany, which is due out in September.
