Stafford Rangers are tomorrow's visitors to the United Stadium, and Oxford will be hoping to build on their 2-1 victory over Burton Albion last Sunday.[@opponent]Stafford Rangers[/@opponent][@connection]Stafford Rangers[/@connection] It's still very early in the season, and although the club is lying lower in the pyramid than at any time since at least 1962, this shouldn't be a reason for concern, yet. The result, and the performance, at Burton showed that there is a real team spirit in the United camp, and the celebrations at the end of that game demonstrated the squad's commitment to the cause. Of course, that commitment is meaningless if it isn't translated into results, but there is still every reason to suppose that the Us will be among the challengers again this season.
In addition to Chris Willmott, who is still a few weeks away from fitness, and Phil Gilchrist, who has now started full training and who could feature within a couple of weeks, Jim Smith will be without speedy winger Joel Ledgister, who is ouf for a fortnight with a knee injury. However, midfielder Michael Standing has recovered from the knock that saw him miss the Burton match and he could be on the bench tomorrow. There are unlikely to be any other changes to the side that won at the Pirelli Stadium last weekend, although Smith may well tinker with the line up for Monday's visit to Stevenage Borough.
Stafford Rangers spent most of last season in or around the relegation zone, and they've started this campaign with similar intentions, having failed to pick up a point in any of their first three matches. Their only away game so far was a 1-0 defeat at newcomers Farsley Celtic, in the first game of the season. It would be a big upset if the side for which David Oldfield is assistant manager were to get anything from tomorrow's game, but as Oxford are well aware, they need to guard against complacency. Rage Online is, however, as confident as we can be that Oxford will win, and we predict a repeat of last season's 2-0 scoreline.
Last night Burton won 2-1 at Weymouth, with the Terra's former United striker Stuart Douglas getting sent off with a straight red for an elbowing offence. There are three Conference games tonight, with Aldershot visiting Histon, York City hosting Forest Green Rovers, and Monday's opponents Stevenage travelling to Kidderminster Harriers.
