Shrews give Us Tues blues

A goal in the 29th minute from Darren Moss was enough to take the points for Shrewsbury in a dire game in dire conditions at Gay Meadow. Needless to say, the winning goal was created by Nigel Jemson. United only had one clear chance, when Jamie Brooks was through on the goalkeeper, but he shot over.

United started with the same line-up as began the Halifax game, despite hints that Ian McCaldon's place might be under threat and that Ian Atkins was considering playing five at the back. In the 39th minute Brooks came on for Andy Scott, who went off with a back injury, and after 66 minutes Manny Omoyinmi replaced Paul Powell on the left wing.

Referee M. Cowburn booked Paul Moody and loanee Matthew Bound. The attendance was a paltry 2,576 . A match report is available here.

In the only other 3rd Division game played this evening Luton went a goal down to Kidderminster at Aggborough but ended up winning 4-1. Luton are still second but are now level on points with Plymouth. Shrewsbury have risen to fourth.

Mark Wright's first game in charge of Chester against Northwich Victoria ended in a 2-1 defeat. Speculation mounts that Wright is poised to put in a bid for United pair Phil Bolland and Scott Guyett and that Ted McMinn is to join him at the Deva.

United's reserves face Millwall at Court Place Farm tomorrow afternoon. Midfielders Martin Thomas and Paul Tait are expected to feature after being out with injury. Joey Beauchamp and Darren Patterson, despite resuming training, are unlikely to be involved just yet. Meanwhile ROS Rob Folland is going to have to undergo a groin operation and is unlikely to be fit for some time.
