Oxford United beat Old Woodstock Town 3-1 after extra time this evening in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup quarter-final at Abingdon Town's Northcourt Road ground, where the Woodstock side play their home games. This was the clubs' first competitive meeting, and the Woodstock side, managed by United's Youth and Community General Manager Simon Lenagan, gave a creditable performance against their professional opponents. Eddie Hutchinson opened the scoring on the half-hour with a sublime back-flick that beat Alan Foster. Ben Hinchliffe was virtually a spectator in the first half, but after the break Woodstock started to pile on the pressure, without ever looking like scoring. That was until two minutes from time, when John Mills headed in an equaliser from a corner to force the additional half hour.
Extra time belonged to Oxford, whose professionalism and fitness started to show. Foster made one excellent save from a Hutchinson header, and then Richard Groves made the breakthrough when he smashed home an Adam Bowerman cross after good work by Alex Fisher. Groves was on the scoresheet again five minutes into the second period of extra time when he converted Ian Sampson's cross to ensure that the crowd didn't have to endure the agony of a penalty shoot-out.
Tonight's Conference results were a mixed bag as far as Oxford's fortunes were concerned. Histon stayed second with a routine 2-0 win over fourth-bottom Barrow, while their near neighbours Cambridge United kept track with them thanks to a 1-0 win at third-bottom Grays Athletic. Stevenage Borough made sure that they stayed in the hunt by beating fifth-bottom Woking 1-0. However, United's opponents on Saturday, Torquay United, dropped two points when held to a 3-3 draw by sixth-bottom Forest Green Rovers. Matt Green and Chris Hargreaves both scored for the Gulls. Crawley Town moved above Oxford to seventh on goal difference after their 5-1 thrashing of bottom side Lewes, with Simon Weatherstone scoring the third goal. Kettering Town missed the chance to make up much ground when they were held to a goalless draw at second-bottom Northwich Victoria. Rushden & Diamonds kept alive their very faint play-off hopes with a 2-0 win over seventh-bottom York City, with the Rushden goals scored by Rob Wolleaston and Andy Burgess, just showing how low York have fallen recently.
