Saturday super-score

From the Rage Online newsdesk Sunday, April 17th, 2005

Yesterday’s footy results saw United slip another place, down to 14th in division four, as a result of Cheltenham’s 1-0 win over Northampton. However, Darlington’s 1-1 draw at Mansfield means that United can still reach the play-offs, provided they win all their remaining games, Darlo lose all theirs, the other results go Oxford’s way, and United are able to make up the goal difference. The gap is nine points, and there are three games to go, so, er, ummm…

At the bottom of the table Cambridge are all but relegated following their 4-0 defeat at 2nd-placed Scunthorpe, for whom Andy Crosby scored the second goal. Cambridge are now nine points from safety, and they also have three games left. This is because Rushden beat Boston 4-2, with Billy Sharp scoring a hat-trick, which result leaves the Diamonds six points ahead of Kidderminster. The Harriers managed an excellent 1-1 draw with top of the table Yeovil, Mark Rawle scoring Kiddy’s equaliser with eight minutes left. Shrewsbury are all but safe following their 1-1 draw at Rochdale, which takes the Shrews to nine points above Kidderminster.

Bristol Rovers missed out on the opportunity to climb above Oxford after they were held 2-2 at Chester, which means that the side formerly managed by Mark Wright are safe from relegation, this season at least. In the big play-off battle, Lincoln came out on top, beating Macclesfield 2-0 while, elsewhere, Notts County and Grimsby drew 2-2 and Wycombe lost 2-1 at home to Bury.

In division three, Peterborough virtually assured their relegation after going down 2-0 at home to Walsall. This leaves the Posh nine points from safety with just three games to play. Wrexham lost 1-0 at Bristol City to leave them eight points below the line, but they have five games left. Torquay’s last minute penalty gave them a 1-0 win over Port Vale to bring them level on points with Franchise, who lost 1-0 to champions-elect Luton. The most likely scenario is that one of the Gulls or the Pariahs will go down with Stockport, P’boro, and Denis Smith’s Wrexham, although neither Port Vale nor Oldham, who drew 2-2 at Barnsley, are safe yet.

In the Conference, where there are only two games left for everyone, there is still nothing decided other than Barnet are champions. There are still nine clubs fighting for the four play-off places, although Carlisle, who won 1-0 at Burton, and Hereford, 1-0 winners at Halifax, look almost certain to clinch two of those places. We will probably keep you updated on events, if we remember.
