Rushden around to little purpose

From the Rage Online newsdesk Tuesday, October 14th, 2003

It’s that time of year when the reserves get a run out and can pretend that they’re first teamers. Tomorrow the LDV road-show comes to town, with Rushden & Diamonds the visitors to the Kas. The concept that United have to be considered underdogs to this jumped up non-league outfit is so patently laughable that we refuse even to consider it.

Ian Atkins has announced his intention to rest various players, specifically Scott McNiven, Paul Wanless, and Steve Basham. In addition it is possible that Simon Cox could come in for Andy Woodman, Chris Hackett could feature on the right or even up front alongside Jefferson Louis, who might also find himself partnered by Mark Rawle or even a recalled Manny Omoyinmi. Most significantly is the news that Jamie Brooks will be on the bench and will get a decent run out in the second half. Atkins claims that Jamie is 70% fit, with his ankles needing more strengthening, but that the opportunity to get a first team game will give him a huge boost. At last night’s question and answer session Atkins also said that Lee Steele will be returning to full training at the end of November, meaning a possible return to first team action in the New Year.

There is also good news for Dave Waterman, whose son Oakley is due to undergo his final operation at the end of this week. Apparently there is a success rate of 95% associated with this op and so there is light at the end of Oakley’s long dark tunnel for the first time. We wish Oakley, Dave and family all the best. Waterman is also due to feature in the squad tomorrow.

Rushden may or may not play an under-strength team. Onandi Lowe may feature, but then again may not. If Rage Online could be bothered enough to do a prediction we would suggest 2-1 to the Diamonds, but we can’t and so we won’t.
