Royal Welcome

Oxford United continued their busy week with the capture of talented midfielder Josh Shama. The former Reading youngster has penned a one-year deal with the Yellows after his contract at the Madejski Stadium came to an end this summer.

The 18-year-old will be added to United’s growing development squad for the upcoming campaign and follows the likes of Max Crocombe, Tyrone Marsh, David Lynn, Callum O’Dowda and Sam Long in committing their futures to the Us.

Shama impressed during trial games at the end of last season after not being offered a new deal with the Royals. With Chairman Ian Lenagan keen to implement a pathway for young players into United’s first-team set-up this year, the club have given Shama to chance to impress with a 12-month contract with a club option of a further year.

The attacking midfielder spent six years at the Berkshire club, but failed to break into the first-team squad under former manager Brian McDermott. Despite the club only announcing the arrival of the 18 year-old this week, many fans will know from Shama’s Twitter account that the ex-Royal signed a deal with the Yellows back in April.

Shama is excited for the challenge ahead: “This is a fantastic opportunity. I have been made to feel very welcome ever since the trials and am looking forward to pre-season.

“The club are investing in developing young players, the infrastructure with the sports science, Football Squad software and facilities are great and it is an exciting time to be joining.”
