York City 0 Oxford United 0
Just when Oxford needed three points to keep in the play-off race, they drop two at York. This was a scrappy game in which both sides had opportunities to score, but neither side was able to take them.
Scene: A Graveyard
Alas, poor Season! I knew it, Horatio: a seasonof infinite pest, of most frustrating fancy: it hathborne me to believe a thousand times; and now, howabhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims atit. Here hung that pen that Elvis saved I knownot how oft. To say naught of Beano hitting the bloodybar in the final bastard minute.
The Battman was back, but it was the ref who was robbing, awarding a penalty for a handball that took place outside the area. Farrell was unable to play because of a stupid agreement struck between the sides when York loaned him to Oxford. Yemi replaced the hapless Nelthorpe to no effect, while Hutchinson came on for Clist, but it was too little, too late.
The arbiter was R West, not known for his previous involvement in Oxford games. Yellows were shown: to Adam Murray and Adam Chapman for dissent, the dissenting Adams, and to the Battyman for battiness. There were 2,268 at Bootham, of whom 356 were on the side of Righteousness and Good.
So, is it season over? Well, obviously it is, but for those of a delusional nature the good news was that Oxford remain five points behind Kidderminster Harriers, who drew 2-2 at Forest Green Rovers despite having two players, including Justin Richards, sent off. Also on the credit side was Kettering Town's 0-0 draw with Barrow, while Wrexham's goalless draw with Histon could possibly be considered cost-neutral. Sadly, Stevenage Borough weren't playing the drawing game, and they beat second-placed Cambridge United 2-1, despite having a player sent off too.
It's as you were at the batty bottom too, with York still fourth from bottom, one point behind the imploding Weymouth. Northwich Victoria, with five games left, are 14 points from safety after beating third-bottom Woking 2-0. Ebbsfleet dropped to 17th, six points above York, after being beaten 2-0 at Mansfield, for whom Mr Robert Duffy scored a goal, while Altrincham's 2-2 draw with Eastbourne Borough makes it highly unlikely that they will occupy their customary fourth-bottom spot come the season's end, as they are seven points ahead of York.
