Rose blooms at Poppies

From the Rage Online newsdesk Monday, April 28th, 2008

In tonight's testimonial match for Brett Solkhon, an Oxford United XI beat Kettering Town 4-3 in an entertaining game at Rockingham Road. Danny Rose gave United the lead, and further goals from Barry Quinn and Phil Trainer gave the Us a 3-2 half-time lead, with the Poppies goals coming from a Solkhon penalty and David Bridges.

In the second half, Kettering equalised through Jon Brady, but United, who were never behind to the Conference North champions, saw out the game with a further goal from Matty Taylor. The young striker celebrated the news that he has apparently been offered a full-time contract with Oxford for next season. The crowd was approximately 550.[@opponent]kettering town[/@opponent][@connection]kettering town[/@connection]

United's side featured a number of triallists and youth players, including 18-year-old Ipswich Town keeper Andrew Plummer. Mark Coulson was another of the 19 players used, the left back formerly with Peterborough United and Histon. None of the crop of loan players was used tonight, although Luke Bennett, who has been out with a cruciate ligament injury since September 2006, got his first taste of action since being injured. John Dempster featured for Kettering, but apparently is was JP Marna who caught the eye.
