Return of the Whing

Article by Dan Church Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

Oxford United have continued to build their squad ahead of the new season after midfielder Andy Whing signed a new two-year contract. Fans’ favourite Whing made 25 appearances for the Us last season, scoring two goals, including his stunning overhead kick against Rochdale which was named as United’s ‘Goal of the Season’.

The 28 year-old, who initally arrived from Division Three side Leyton Orient as a right-back, put pen to paper on a new deal that could keep him at the Kassam Stadium until 2016.

The combative midfielder started his career at Coventry City before moving to Brighton and Hove Albion in 2007, and was voted ‘Player of the Season’ for the Seagulls in 2009 before moving to the O’s.

After arriving in the summer of 2011, Whing was named Supporters’ ‘Player of the Season’ in his début campaign with the Us and has quickly grown on supporters due to his tremendous work ethic.

Whing is looking forward to the upcoming season: “It’s good to sign and to get things sorted and now it’s all about coming back for pre-season ready to go.

“The whole club is set up for success and as players we have a real determination to make that happen in the coming season. The fans are brilliant and there is a lot to look forward to here.

“Obviously we wanted a play-off spot or to achieve promotion, but I’m really excited about the next two years. It’s a new era with the turnaround of players and I’m looking forward to getting back for pre-season.”
