United's reserves lost their final match of the season 3-2 at Loftus Road this afternoon. QPR were by far the better team and only the impressive keeping of Oxford's Richard Knight prevented QPR from winning by a greater margin.
Rangers opened the scoring after 17 minutes through Ross Weare who beat Ian McGuckin to the ball. Oxford equalised through Steve Anthrobus who was unmarked to head home a Paul Powell corner.
After an hour Simon Koejoe restored QPR's lead and ninety seconds later Alvin Bubb outpaced Andy Linighan before lobbing Knight. With quarter of an hour left Robert Lovegrove beat the Rangers goalie with a fine cross-shot but United were unable to find another goal.
Shades of 1982 and Thames Valley Royals. Plans were revealed in today's Sun that could lead to a merger of first division Wimbledon and their relegated peers QPR. The rationale would appear to be Rangers' mounting debts and near insolvency combined with the Dons' need for a permanent home.
Despite the fact that a merger would totally alienate both sets of supporters it appears that talks between the clubs are at an advanced stage, although whether the Sun's reports can be believed is open to question. One sticking point is apparently the merged club's name with both parties wanting their moniker to have preference.
Needless to say fans of both clubs are up in arms and protest groups are already being organised, with Wimbledon fans arranging a meeting before their game this Saturday and QPR supporters talking of a demonstration at Wasps next home game. Details of where messages of support can be sent will be posted on Rage Online shortly.
