George Dugdale
Adam Dugdale has a story more interesting than most footballers. After coming through the youth team ranks at Crewe Alexandra to earn a one year professional contract, the centre-back spent time out on loan in non-league football with Accrington Stanley and Southport. On his return to Crewe in 2007, the Liverpool-born youngster was released.
After permanent spells at Southport, Droylsden and Barrow, Dugdale was struggling to find a footballing home. Further loan spells followed whilst the Cumbrians held his contract, with Hyde United and AFC Telford the latest clubs on the CV. Despite signing a permanent deal at Telford in 2010, the now 22-year-old was looking for a club the following summer.
It was at this point that Dugdale phoned Dario Gradi. Gradi had stepped down from his post at Crewe at the same time as Dugdale's release in 2007, but returned to the managerial role after the sacking of Gudjon Thordarson. Knowing Dugdale well, Gradi offered his former youth-product a pre-season trial.
Dugdale impressed and was offered a six month deal, which was later extended until the end of the season. After making his first Football League appearances in a Crewe shirt, Dugdale was offered a further one year deal. Since then, Dugdale has become a regular in the Crewe back four, making 30 appearances so far this season and scoring 2 goals.
Ahead of his 31st appearance against Oxford United on Saturday, Rage Online had a short chat with a player who has shown the benefits of never giving up on your dream.
Rage Online: You were man-of-the-match in Crewe's 3-1 victory over Oxford in the reverse fixture. How important was that for you so early in the season?
Adam Dugdale: Yeah, it was great to be man-of-the-match. Most importantly, we got the three points and a good home win.
RO: Despite a disappointing defeat, you were impressed by Oxford. What in particular stood out?
AD: I thought the game could have gone either way but we took our chances. Oxford are a strong side and a good footballing team.
RO: Since we last met, Dario Gradi has left the club. How big an impact did he have on your career?
AD: Dario has had the biggest impact on my game. He give me a second chance and he is the best manager I've ever worked for.
RO: Steve Davis is the new man in charge. How has his approach differed from Gradi's?
AD: I don't think it's really fair for me to compare.
RO: Crewe have been inconsistent this season, failing to build on good results. Why do you think that is?
AD: I'm not too sure. Maybe it's because we are still a young side. If I knew the answer, we probably wouldn't be inconsistent!
RO: Crewe's production line of young talent is well known. Nick Powell and Max Clayton are the latest to impress. How far can they go?
AD: Personally, I think they can both go all the way but they need to keep their feet on the ground and keep working hard.
RO: From afar, what is your perception of Oxford United?
AD: Personally, I like Oxford United. I think they are a big club and they have got a lot of potential. I have an uncle who lives there now.
RO: Saturday sees two teams who play 'attractive football' clash. As a no-nonsense centre-back (sorry!), are these games harder to play in?
AD: No, not really. I enjoy playing these games.
RO: On a personal level, what are your hopes for 2012?
AD: Personally, I would like to stay injury free and play as many games as possible. Maybe a play-off push too…
RO: Subscribers to Yellow/Crewe Player would be well advised to catch up on the 'Tootle/Dugdale Show'. Are you set for a career in media?
AD: To be honest with you, it's just a little bit of fun but you never know!
RO: Thank you for your time, Adam. All the best.
AD: You too mate. All the best for the rest of the season, apart from this Saturday!
