Oxford United’s Alfie Potter has penned a new three-year deal at the club, keeping the winger tied to the club until the summer of 2016. The 24-year-old forward joined the Us on-loan from Peterborough United back in July 2009, before making his move permanent following the Yellows promotion back into the Football League.
He put pen to paper on a new two-year deal at United, with a club option of a further 12 months. Potter was a regular in boss Chris Wilder’s team last season, as the former Posh forward made 52 appearances for Oxford, scoring 11 goals to finish as United’s third highest goalscorer . The speedy winger joins the likes of Andy Whing, Max Crocombe and Tyrone Marsh in committing their long-term futures to the club.
Only striker James Constable, captain Jake Wright and goalkeeper Ryan Clarke have tallied more appearances in a Yellow shirt since he arrived four years ago, and with Potter being a ‘fan’s favourite’, his decision to stay at the club will please supporters.
The wing wizard said: “Ever since I came through the door four years ago, I have loved being part of this club and I am really looking forward to being part of it again as we try and take Oxford United up to League 1 and beyond. The fans have been fantastic with me and I can’t wait to get back for pre-season and get playing in front of them again.
“I did OK last year but want to keep improving and growing as a player. We have done a lot of strength and conditioning work which means that I feel so much fitter and stronger than when I first joined and I just want to help Oxford United do well.”
Manager Wilder was also delighted at the news: “I brought Alfie in as one of my first signings and he has progressed season on season. Hopefully he will continue to progress and improve and that will benefit the team and the club over the next two or three years.
“It is another indication that the senior players have real confidence in the way that Oxford United is going forward as a club. Alfie is a big favourite with the fans but also with the players and the staff and we are absolutely delighted that he has signed.”
