Oxford United will kick-off their Capital One Cup campaign away to Brentford.
The Us were handed an away trip to the Division Two side during the first-round draw of the League Cup on Tuesday morning.
The Bees missed out on promotion to the top-flight towards the end of last season after losing 5-1 on aggregate to Middlesbrough in the play-off semi-finals.
Oxford, who lifted the newly reformed Milk Cup back in 1986, will face newly appointed Marinus Dijkhuizen’s Brentford in the week beginning August 10, just a few days after the start of the 2015-16 Division Four season.
It will be the first meeting between the two clubs since United’s LDV Vans Trophy victory at Griffin Park back in 2005, where Matt Robinson scored the winning spot-kick in a 4-3 penalty shootout (1-1 AET).
Michael Appleton’s men’s first round clash with the Bees is one of the toughest opponents Oxford could have been drawn against in this year’s competition.
After finishing fifth in Division Two last season; only Middlesbrough (fourth) and the three demoted Division One teams, Burnley, Queens Park Rangers and Hull City, finished higher than Brentford in English football last term.
During last season’s Capital One Cup, the Yellows caused an upset in the opening round as Carlton Morris and Danny Hylton scored at Ashton Gate to give the Us a 2-1 win over eventual Division Three champions Bristol City.
In addition, Appleton’s side nearly knocked out Division One opposition in the second round, only to lose narrowly to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on penalties (7-6).
Besides Oxford’s draw, the remaining notable Capital One Cup first round ties include away trips for the relegated Division One sides Hull, QPR and Burnley.
The Tigers visit fellow Division Four outfit Accrington Stanley, meanwhile 1967 winners QPR travel to recently relegated Division Three side Yeovil Town and Burnley face a trip to Port Vale in the opening stages.
Promoted Conference champions Barnet take on Millwall in an early season London derby, plus play-off winners Bristol Rovers entertain Division Two side Birmingham City at the Memorial Stadium.
And finally, Oxford’s arch-rivals Swindon Town will play Exeter City at the County Ground.
