On Saturday afternoon Oxford City beat Chesham United 2-1 at Court Place Farm to earn a place in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup. This, of course, is the stage when Oxford United also enters the competition, and it sets up the possibility of an all-Oxford derby for the first time in 50 years, when the sides met in the second qualifying round.[@opponent]oxford city[/@opponent]
City might consider themselves somewhat fortunate to be in the draw for the next round. In the first half Chesham were clearly the better side, and created a number of scoring chances, but they were unable to make their superiority tell. The visitors eventually took the lead five minutes into the second half when they broke quickly and scored with a superb long-range shot. This perked up City and they started to come more into the game. The equaliser arrived just before the hour, and had more than a touch of fortune as a clearance hit Redknap and looped over the Chesham keeper into the net. City took the lead five minutes later. A fine right-wing run and cross was met by former United youth player James Faulkner to send the home supporters wild and silence the noisy Chesham fans for the first time.
The draw for the next round, which also includes Brackley Town, who won 1-0 at Boreham Wood, takes place later today.
There was also a fair number of Conference matches played today. Crawley Town maintained their position at the top of the League by beating 17th-placed Barrow 4-0, with Jamie Cook scoring twice, including a penalty. Kettering Town are second following their 2-1 win at 14th-placed Salisbury City, with John Dempster scoring Kettering's equaliser. Cambridge United are third after beating 15th-placed Weymouth 1-0, while Kidderminster Harriers' 3-1 win over 12th-placed Ebbsfleet United leaves them fourth. Histon, who are fifth, are without a game this weekend because their match with Wrexham has been postponed due to international call-ups for the Welshmen.
Bottom of the table Northwich Victoria beat third-bottom Grays Athletic 2-0, while second-bottom Lewes beat fifth-bottom Forest Green Rovers 3-2. Fourth-bottom Eastbourne Borough play Stevenage Borough tomorrow. Woking, in 18th place, were beaten 2-0 at home by York City, who have climbed to 13th, dropping Oxford one place to 18th. Seventh-placed Rushden & Diamonds face eighth-placed Torquay United tomorrow.
