In the real last Manor match, the Milk Cup reunion bash, the spoils were shared between Oxford and QPR. The final score was 4-4 although United should claim the moral victory as two of Rangers' goals were scored by Mike Ford and their fourth came from former Oxford star Johnny Byrne. Oxford's goals were scored by Kevin Brock, Mark Jones (2) and Jeremy Charles.
Amongst the luminaries who took to the Manor turf for a final time were three goalkeepers Alan Judge, Steve Hardwick and Roy Burton, plus Bobby MacDonald, John Trewick, Les Phillips, Peter Rhoades-Brown, Gary Briggs, Peter Foley, Neil Slatter, Trevor Hebberd, and Chicken George (and probably one or two others). Donning the QPR colours to make up the numbers were Colin Clarke, Gary Barnet, Phil Wilson and Paul Berry.
Briggs looked lean and like he could still perform a useful job at centre back, and made a couple of crunching tackles including a corker on Clive Walker. Foley's age got the better of him and he had to be stretchered from the field and left in an ambulance. The teams were led out by Jim Smith and Maurice Evans' son Paul. The biggest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for Dave Langan, who arrived on crutches.
In the really important match of the day Rage On defeated rival fanzine Yellow Fever at South Park. The half-time scoreline was goalless, but shortly into the second period Rob C put RO ahead with a sweetly struck shot. Defensive lapses and a slight bit of cheating allowed YF to equalise and then take the lead through two goals from Doctor Dave.
Just as it looked like YF, who had fortuitously dominated the game, were going to take the honours up popped Neil W to knock home an equaliser following some good work by Domi. So the game ended 2-2 and a penalty shoot-out was required. RO won the Daisy in the Hand draw and elected to shoot first.
Rob C went from hero to villain as he blasted over, but YF also missed their first pen – an excellent stop from Marky G. Domi scored the next but so did YF. Both sides missed their next kick before Beeves put RO in the driving seat again. YF missed, as did RO their fifth (a very lucky save by Dave Clarke 5). However YF's fifth penalty hit the post to ensure that Rage On won the battle of the fanzines!
Man of the Match: Domi Crowder (although Marky G came close).
Rage On: Marky G, Martin B, Ginger Yellow, Neil W, Ali C, Domi, Stuart, Doctor Bob, Rob C, Beeves.
Yellow Fever threw down the gauntlet of a rematch next season. A victorious Rage On stupidly accepted.
