Rage Online was sadly misinformed (not for the first time!). The Reserves did play last night, losing 3-2 at home to Norwich to take their unwinning run to almost eleven months. United, 2-1 down at half-time, had their goals scored by Leon Mike and Simon Weatherstone. The game was more notable for the presence of another Mike – of the Ford variety. He played in defence, starting a worrying rumour that he might be called upon for the first team game against Bristol City on Saturday, especially as left-sided defender Ian McGuckin's knee injury turns out to be fairly serious.
Meanwhile Denis Smith today attended a reserve fixture between QPR and Barnet to check out a player, the identity of whom has not been revealed. Apparently Smith was pleased with what he saw but didn't reveal any more than that. Smith's assistant Mickey Lewis could have been making his debut tonight for Banbury United in their 2-1 defeat at Corby Town.
Two of United's more prominent backroom staff are due to leave the club in the near future. Commercial manager, and ex-Gosford Hill boy, Trevor Baxter wants to “spend more time with his family” (didn't realise Trev was a politician) whilst website and programme editor and general chap Dave Crabtree is off to pursue moose in far-flung Canada. Interestingly United are only advertising for one replacement….
