New U's

A crowd of 5,184 A relaunched United side beat third placed Walsall 2-1 at the Manor today thanks to two first half goals from Phil Gray, back in the side after injury, in the 26th and 31st minutes. Dean Keates grabbed Walsall's consolation about five minutes from time. Other changes to United's line-up were the debuts of the two new signings from Brentford, Andy Scott and Robert Quinn, and loan signing Garry Monk from Southampton. John Robertson was recalled to the right back position now he has recovered from injury in place of Lee Jarman. Robertson was stupidly booked by referee Alan Kaye for time-wasting and Scott also saw yellow for a late challenge on Walsall goalkeeper Walker. Read this match report for a more subjective view.

There was good news and bad news for the other relegation candidates. The bad news was Port Vale's away win, but the good news was that it was at the County Ground and saw swindon slip back into the relegation zone. Swansea and Bristol Rovers both drew, the Swans 2-2 at home to Peterborough and the Gas, also at home, 0-0 against Brentford. Following their defeat at home to Wycombe last night Luton are now four points ahead of United, who are now just (?) ten points from safety. Paul Moody scored a hat-trick as Millwall beat Wigan 3-1 at the New Den to justify his £3,500 a week wages.
