The chaos of last year’s transfer deadline day is unlikely to be repeated, as Oxford Head Coach Michael Appleton looks to stick with his current squad for the foreseeable future. This comes after an assured 2-0 over Yeovil Town yesterday, which moved United into 5th in Sky Bet League 2.
After the opening day draw against Crawley Town, many supporters questioned whether another signing was needed to add a different dimension. Appleton spoke of a possibility of a ‘wow’ signing, but since then United have delivered on the pitch and he is satisfied that it can continue with the current squad. On top of this, players currently at other clubs may prove difficult to secure at this late stage, as proved with Tyrone Barnett last year.
Appleton said after the game: “I think we will stick with what we have got. It becomes a problem when the club you are trying to get a player from, then has to find a replacement for them. We’ve got a strong squad, a small one and a couple of injuries have shown that, so it is something we keep an eye on. But it looks bright at the minute and we work ever so hard to keep the players as fit as we possibly can.”
Sam Long’s ankle injury at Sheffield Wednesday may have prompted a move but with George Baldock in good form and Liam Sercombe able to deputise easily, it is unlikely cover will arrive.
One move that is highly likely, is that of midfielder Michael Collins who is looking for a move back up north. This should be completed either within the next 48 hours or when then loan window reopens in September.
