In a pulsating game at the KasStad this afternoon, United took the lead and then had to come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers. Chris Hackett gave United the lead in the 18th minute to cap a fine counter-attacking move after Oxford cleared a Wycombe free-kick just outside the United penalty area. Barry Quinn threaded the ball through to Craig Davies, and his cross was met by Hackett at the far post to beat Frank Talia. United dominated for the remainder of the first half, but in the second period Wycombe pressed the Us back, and with 20 minutes to go Nathan Tyson equalised after a fantastic save by Billy Turley from a Roger Johnson shot fell kindly to him to rifle home. Tyson looked to have given Wycombe victory when he scored his second with just four minutes left, this time from a Kevin Betsy cross, but substitute Danny Morgan earned United a point with his first goal for the club. Hackett was brought down on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area, and his chipped free kick was headed home by the unmarked Morgan from just three yards out.
Brian Talbot made one change from the side that beat Torquay on Wednesday, with Davies replacing Basham in the starting line-up. Roles were reversed when Bash came on for Davies a couple of minutes after Wycombe’s equaliser, and with nine minutes to go Morgan came on for Lee Bradbury, to excellent effect.
Today’s referee was Mick Russell, who had a patchy game, at best. He showed a yellow card to Jon Ashton, his second of the season already. The attendance was 6,364, which was the second highest in the division. We have been promised a match report, which we hope to post online tomorrow sometime.
The draw leaves United sixth in the fledgling league table, one place behind Wycombe. Orient remain the only team in the basement with a 100% record, having won 1-0 in Darlington today. Barnet’s 3-1 win at Carlisle leaves the Bees in second place, while Notts County beat United’s next opponents, Lincoln City, 2-1. Cheltenham are fourth, after they drew 1-1 at Rochdale.
Torquay are propping up the table after they went down 3-0 at Mansfield, while Shrewsbury occupy the second relegation spot following their 2-0 defeat at Bury. Third from bottom are Bristol Rovers, Ian Atkins’ side losing 3-2 at home to Mark Wright’s Peterborough, with Richard Walker scoring for the Gas on the stroke of half-time. Julian Joachim scored twice as Boston drew 2-2 at home to Stockport, while Northampton and Denis Smith’s Wrexham fought out a goalless draw at Sixfields. Chester’s game with Grimsby and Macclesfield’s match against Rushden were both postponed due to the weather.
