On January 7th 1961 United, of the Southern League, lost 3-1 to First Division Leicester City at Filbert Street in the FA Cup third round – City went on to reach the final, which they lost to double winners Spurs. On Jan 8th in 1969 United, now of the Second Division, lost a replay to Southampton 2-0 at the Dell. The following season, on the 7th, United lost a replay at Stoke 3-2. In 1986 the U's, now of the First Division, went down 2-1 after extra time to Spurs at White Hart Lane, John Aldridge scoring for Oxford. |
United have made a new signing, although it's hardly one that's going to appease the supporters clamouring for an improvement. The new player is Garry Monk, a 21 year old defender who joins on a one month loan from Southampton. He is due to go straight into the side to face Walsall this Saturday in a desparate bid to shore up the worst defence in the league, but as another central defender the question is who will he replace? Possibilities are the ageing Andy Linighan, the substandard Wayne Hatswell or the ponderous Lee Jarman, so it will probably be Jon Richardson.
United's reserves somehow contrived to beat Barnet 1-0 at the Manor this evening in a game described as “absolutely appalling”. United's goal was scored in the first half and was missed by the Rage Online informant, but what wasn't missed was the dismissal of Neil McGowan and also of manager Mike Ford, leading to universal derision of the referee.
