United's season finished in a low-key fashion at the New Den where they were beaten by a 6th minute goal from Neil Harris. United started with the same side that began against Scunthorpe but Rob Folland had to come on for Neil McGowan shortly before half-time after the Scottish left-back was stretchered from the field. In the second half Nigel Jemson replaced Simon Weatherstone and with about fifteen minutes left Chris Hackett came on for Steve Anthrobus. Phil Whelan picked up a yellow card for being, well, Phil Whelan. There's a match report, of sorts, round about here.
This result ensured that Millwall will be in the play-offs after Cardiff beat Bristol Rovers 1-0 and Stoke lost 1-0 at Reading. Next season Northampton Town will join United, swindon, Reading and Wycombe in Division Two after they won 2-1 at Torquay. Cheltenham lost 2-1 at Southend and so failed to make the play-offs.
Matt Elliott scored two of Leicester's goals as they beat Bradford 3-0 at Filbert Street. Alex Dyer scored Notts County's first in their 2-2 draw with Bury. Mark MacGregor scored for Forest Green Rovers as they beat Kettering Town 2-0.
Firoz Kassam has agreed to let Denis Smith remain as United's manager for another season following talks between the two yesterday. Smith achieved his aim of keeping Oxford in the Second Division (thanks mainly to other teams being even worse than the U's) and so Kassam is letting Smith start with a clean slate next season. Smith has said that he will sit down next week with the out-of-contract players to discuss their futures, although he is constrained by finances.
But not to the Manor! Craig Russell's loan to St Johnstone has come to an end and he has returned to Maine Road.
