Making Hayes while the sun shines

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, December 11th, 2009

Oxford embark on the Wembley trail again tomorrow, having had one route to the “Home of English Football” (TM) curtailed on Tuesday. Hayes & Yeading United are the visitors in the first round of the FA Trophy, a tournament that many supporters feel is a total and utter waste of 90 minutes plus stoppage time sponsored by Debt Doctor. However, the fact remains that United are involved and that they will (and ought to) be going all out for victory; even more important after Tuesday's drubbing at Barrow.

Chris Wilder will almost certainly make several changes to the regular first team, with fringe players such as Billy Turley, Rhys Day, and Sam Deering likely to be involved. Matt Green may continue his recuperation after a cameo appearance at Barrow. Both Onome Sodje and Franny Green will be eligible, meaning that we may see an all-Green forward line, which will be fun. Skipper Adam Murray, so clearly missed on Tuesday, has recovered from his illness and could feature, but Dannie Bulman was crocked at Holker Street and could be out for a couple of weeks or so.

Hayes feature a couple of ex-Us among their ranks, including former KasStad favourite Steve Basham, currently on loan from Luton Town. He is more likely to get the nod than former Brentford loanee Scott Fitzgerald. While H&Y are now peers of Oxford's in the Conference, the only times that the two sides have met was in last season's FA Cup fourth qualifying round, when James Constable and Jamie Guy gave the Us a 2-0 win. Hayes are undoubtably a stronger side than they were last season (as, indeed, are Yeading) and they are unbeaten in their last six games. However, their last defeat was a fairly humiliating 1-0 home loss to Staines in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.
