Matt Day was signed from Portsmouth by Jim Smith during the 2006 close season. He can play either as a centre back, a wing back, or a full back, and he has shown a rare ability to find the net with spectacular long-range shots. His form dipped during the 2007/08 season, and he was one of a number of players transfer listed. Unlike many of his colleagues, though, this spurred Day on to greater effort, and he signed a new one-year contract at the end of the season. Day was released at the end of the 2008/09 season as part of Chris Wilder's cull. Won one England C cap, against Bosnia & Herzegovina, and scored too.
