Simon Daniel Roy King, born in Oxford, was one of those rare players: a defender who has come through the United youth ranks. King made his first start for United in the final game of the 2001/02 season and had the potential to be the finest home grown left back the club has produced. A regular in the reserves, King's first-team opportunities were severely limited, and he was released by Ian Atkins, who failed to give so many young players their opportunity. Signed by Barnet, and was voted their player of the season before leaving for Gillingham. England Semi-Pro international.
