Having made an impact in the Second Division, Joey was bought by West Ham United for £1,000,000 after the end of the 1993-94 season. However, Joey failed to settle at Upton Park, having just bought a house in Oxford and being told, wrongly, that Westam were happy for him to live here, and he was sold to Swindon Town for £850,000 just six weeks later, having played just one game for the Hammers: a friendly at Oxford City.
His stay at the County Ground was an unhappy one, and he lost his first-team place after falling out with manager Steve McMahon. Hearing that he was available, Denis Smith bought Joey back to the Manor for just £70,000, 16 months after he had been sold. Suffered a toe injury and had to retire in 2002. Sadly took his own life on 18 February 2022.
