Arthur Longbottom first came to prominence with Leeds-based Methley United. He signed for Queen’s Park Rangers in March 1954, playing 202 games and netting 62 goals while supplementing his income by working as a barber. He then joined Port Vale for £2000 in May 1961, for whom he was an ever-present the following season, scoring on his debut and finishing as joint top scorer with 20 goals. In total Longbottom scored 18 goals in 52 League appearances for Vale. In January 1963 he returned briefly to London to play for Millwall, who paid £2000 for his services for which they were rewarded with one goal in 10 appearances. In August that year he then moved to Oxford United where he finished the 1963–64 season as top scorer with 14 goals. Longbottom stayed at the Manor until October 1964 when he was transferred to Colchester United. He scored 12 goals in 33 games for the Layer Road outfit and at the end of the season he left for Scarborough where he ended his career. He later changed his surname to Langley by deed poll.
